Fund Development & Communications Assistant

Note: This position is contingent on funding - applicants must be eligible for employment under the Canada Summer Jobs guidelines (details below)

Horizons for Youth is an emergency shelter for homeless and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 years old. We provide emergency accommodations and support programs for up to 45 youth each day.

The successful candidate will assist with tasks related to fund development, event planning, marketing, and assisting in the design of promotional materials.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the Supervision of our Development Associate:

  • Research prospective funders and assist in drafting and editing grant proposals
  • Assist with managing and drafting social media material and website content
  • Assist with preparing communications materials for distribution
  • Support the Development Associate host corporate volunteer groups at the shelter
  • Assist in planning and implementing fundraising events as requested by the Development Associate and Operations Manager
  • Support the Development Associate with communications with donors and donor recognition
  • Assist with general office administration when needed

Experience:

  • Experience in developing and coordinating fundraising activities an asset
  • Experience working with marginalized populations
  • Sales, marketing, and events experience an asset

Skills / Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Excellent organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, establish timelines and meet deadlines
  • Proficient in Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
  • Software proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Strong writing skills
  • Pleasant phone personality and an ability to talk to donors and potential donors confidently
  • Must complete and be clear of a Criminal Record Check

Eligibility:

In order to be eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • They must be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the employment period;
  • Eligible applicants must have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in September;
  • Applicants must be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person who has been granted refugee status;
  • Participants in the program will be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Salary: $11:40 per hour

Hours: 30/week (Monday-Thursday, 9am-4:30pm)

Start Date: July 4, 2017

End Date: August 24, 2017

Office Assistant

  • Type and proofread correspondence, forms and other documents
  • Receive and forward telephone or electronic enquiries
  • Maintain and prepare reports from manual or electronic files, inventories, mailing lists and databases
  • Sort, process and verify applications, receipts and other documents
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail manually or electronically
  • Send and receive messages
  • Perform basic bookkeeping tasks
  • Compile data, statistics and other information
  • Prepare invoices and bank deposits
  • Provide general information to clients and the public
  • Photocopy and collate documents for distribution, mailing and filing
  • Organize and schedule office work
  • Label, file and retrieve documents
  • Store, update and retrieve financial data

Experience:

  • Experience an asset

Skills / Abilities:

Assistant Cook

Note: This position is contingent on funding - applicants must be eligible for employment under the Canada Summer Jobs guidelines (details below)

Horizons for Youth is an emergency shelter for homeless and at-risk youth between the ages of 16-24 years old. We provide emergency accommodations and support programs for up to 45 youth each day.

The successful candidate will assist with meal preparation and food management at Horizons.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Under the Supervision of our Head Cook & Operations Manager:

  • Prepare and cook full course meals
  • Prepare and cook individual dishes and foods
  • Prepare and cook special meals for residents as instructed by dietitian or chef
  • Plan menus
  • Ensure quality of food and determine size of food proportions
  • Estimate food requirements and costs
  • Inspect kitchens and food service areas
  • Supervise kitchen volunteers
  • Maintain inventory and records of food, supplies and equipment
  • Work with specialized cooking equipment (deep fryer, etc.)
  • Clean kitchen and work areas
  • Wash dishes

Experience:

  • Experience an asset

Skills / Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Experience in food preparation in a group or residential setting an asset
  • Familiarity with the health & safety guidelines for food preparation
  • Experience in menu planning and inventory an asset
  • Self starter – able to work with little or no direction
  • Excellent communication skills verbal communication skills
  • Experience in a non-profit, community based organization an asset
  • Ability to work with a diverse clientele. Sensitivity to different cultures is essential.
  • Complete and be clear of a Criminal Record Check
  • Food Handler Certification required
